Concrete measures: The biggest problem for cows with high genetic potential, especially in the early lactation phase, is the provision of sufficient amounts of nutrients. If a cow is to give birth again early, problems and difficulties due to nutritional deficiencies are to be expected. Causes of insufficient nutrient intake: The limiting factors here are feed intake, concentration, digestibility and nutrient conversion. An attempt is made to compensate for this by increasing the proportion of concentrated feed in the overall ration. It is easy to exceed the rules for feeding ruminants. The pH value in the rumen is outside the normal range and rumen diseases such as acidosis or alkalosis are becoming increasingly common. Nutrient consumption drops significantly and the cow has to fall back on reserves. The risk of ketosis increases and the cow's health worsens. Live yeast cultures Saccharomyces cerevisiae: The essential composition of the rumen flora and fauna is the result of constant feeding with the same ingredients to create stable conditions in the rumen. The composition and reproduction of many microorganisms in the rumen depend on this. Strong fluctuations in rumen pH reduce microbial activity and reproductive rates. This condition impairs the utilization of the nutrients supplied. The risk of disruptions increases significantly. When dosing, the digestion speeds of the components, the required amount of biomass and the nutrient concentration should be coordinated. Unfavorable metabolic products and the influence of oxygen should be minimized. Special feed additives can be helpful. In addition to its buffering effect, yeast influences the composition of the rumen microflora. This is how it works: We differentiate between two types of yeast. The first is dead yeast and the second is live yeast cultures. Dead yeast, most commonly brewer's yeast, provides high amounts of vitamin B and growth factors (short-chain peptides, medium-chain fatty acids, phospholipids and enzymes). Thanks to them, protozoa and protein-cleaving bacteria can increase their population by more than five times. Live yeast cultures, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, have a positive effect by stimulating other microorganisms in the rumen. Crystal yeast permanently improves the digestibility of organic substances and fiber in the ration. Results of the practical use of crystal yeast: Numerous studies and experiments have confirmed the profitability of the use of live yeast. The most common finding was an increase in dry matter intake to 2.5 kg per cow per day. In studies by the Sano Agrar Institute, dry matter intake could be significantly increased by adding live yeast both before and after calving. Especially at the beginning of lactation, it prevents weight loss when milk production is high and contributes to an increase in productivity of up to 2.5 kg FCM per cow per day. By using Kristall Hefe®, the weight loss was less and a positive energy balance was achieved from the 6th week of lactation. In the control group, however, this did not occur until 6 weeks later, despite lower efficiency.
